In 1992, Nilofer Shahid launched her fashion house Meeras (that literally translates into legacy) – that has kept the rich, mughal heritage in this part of the world alive with her ethereal, evergreen collections. Hailing from a family of warriors, poets, writers and painters, Nilofer soon established herself as a formidable force in the fashion arena, with her penchant for grandeur and elaborate historical designs that end up becoming a part of her exuberant collections.
A believer of fine, strong aesthetics, Nilofer grew up reading Khalil Gibran and admiring A.R Chaughtai's paintings. And they have played an important role in developing her sense of design and continue to be a part of her collections to date. From Islamic calligraphy to Mughal architecture to the heritage of Central Asia , Nilofer's work has spanned the east in its truest meaning.
This couturier inspired by art & history, has often made headlines in the fashion capital of the world, Paris . She first showcased her designs in Paris Fashion Week in the year 1997, and became the first Pakistani designer ever to on the Parisian catwalk. Winning rave reviews for her debut in Paris , she was equated to Dior by French newspaper Le Figaro. Nilofer since then has revisited Paris in a few high profile settings. She displayed a collection inspired by Kashmiri shawls alongside the work of the late Spanish fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga Eisaguirre, from July 4, 2006 to January 28, 2007, with an exhibit at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in the gardens of the Palais Royale.
Nilofer with her background deeply entrenched in historical philosophy and art, believes in transferring ‘art on fabric' and that is the main premise behind her collections. This is how Nilofer has managed to create fascinating pieces of couture – which speak volumes of her deep, eastern sensibilities challenged with modern western patterns and designs. Her love for creating couture art pieces has won her great acclaim from the local and international press.
Her clients include Princess Haifa (daughter of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia ), Princess Nourah (wife of the governor of Riyadh ), Princess Jawaherah Al Thani of Qatar , Jemima Goldsmith, pop star Madonna, Olivia George Harrison and the late Lady Diana Spencer to name just a few.
Nilofer, like other Pakistani designers, has explored the opportunities across the border, participating in Bridal Asia International Fashion Week in Delhi in 2004 alongside Faiza Samee and Shehla – and Bridal Asia 2005 alongside Saadia Mirza. In Paris, the French press labeled her collection a “beautiful fairy tale.”
