Vivienne Westwood(1941–)
Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood helped set the style for modern punk and New Wave music.

Synopsis:
Born Vivienne Isabel Swire in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, on April 8, 1941. Considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the world, Westwood rose to fame in the late 1970s when her early designs helped shape the look of the punk rock movement.

Early Years:
Born Vivienne Isabel Swire on April 8, 1941, in the English town of Glossop in Derbyshire. She came from humble beginnings. Her father was a cobbler, while her mother helped the family keep ends meet by working at a local cotton mill.
At the age of 17, Vivienne's family moved to Harrow in the country of Middlesex, where the future fashion icon found work at a local factory and eventually enrolled at a teacher training school.
As Vivienne would later recall, her childhood years were far from London's high life. "I lived in a part of the country that had grown up in the Industrial Revolution," she once said. "I didn't know about art galleries…I'd never seen an art book, never been to the theatre."
By the early 1960s Vivienne's life seemed established. She'd married Derek Westwood, with whom she had son, Ben, and embarked on work as a teacher. Then, however, everything changed. Her first marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm Mclaren, an art student and future manager of the Sex Pistols. With Mclaren, Westwood had a second son, Joseph. Through her new partner, Westwood, who'd begun making jewelry on the side, was introduced to a new world of creative freedom and the power art had on the political landscape. "I latched onto Malcolm as somebody who opened doors for me," Westwood said. "I mean, he seemed to know everything I needed at the time."

A Blossoming Career:
In 1971, Mclaren opened a boutique shop at 430 Kings Road in London and started filling it with Westwood's designs. While the name of the shop seemed to be in constant flux—it was changed five times—it proved to be an important fashion center for the punk movement. When Mclaren became manager of the Sex Pistols, it was Westwood's designs that dressed the band and help it carve out its identity.
But as the punk movement faded, Westwood was hardly content to rest on her laurels. She's constantly been ahead of the curve, not just influencing fashion, but often times dictating it. After her run with the Sex Pistols, Westwood went an entirely new direction with her Pirate collection of frilly shirts and other attire. Her styles have also included the mini-crini of the 1980s and the frayed tulle and tweed suit of the 1990s. She's even proved it's perfectly possible to make a subversive statement with underwear. "Vivienne's effect on other designers has been rather like a laxative," English designer Jasper Conran once explained. "Vivienne does, and others follow."

Later Years:
Coupled with Westwood's unconventional style sense, is an outspokenness and daring that demonstrates a certain level of fearlessness about her and her work. In one famous incident she impersonated the Margaret Thatcher on the cover of an British magazine. To do so, she wore a suit Thatcher had ordered but not yet received, an act that made the Thatcher irate.
Still, Westwood's influence is hard to deny. Twice she has been named British designer of the year and was awarded the O.B.E. (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1992.
For more than 30 years, even after she had long made her fortune and fame, Westwood lived in the same small South London apartment, paying just $400 a month for the home and riding her bike to her studio in Battersea.
In 1993, ten years after Westwood and Mclaren split, Westwood married for a second time, to her assistant, Andreas Kronthaler, who is 25 years her junior. Today, Kronthaler is her design partner. The couple resides in South London.

Vittorio Missoni Fashion Designer (1954–)
Italian business executive Vittorio Missoni is best known for serving as CEO of the Missoni brand, founded by his parents in the 1950s. In 2013, a plane carrying Vittorio Missoni, along with his wife three others, disappeared off the coast of Venezuela.

Synopsis:
Born in 1954 in Lombardy, Italy, Vittorio Missoni's parents, Ottavio and Rosita, were the founders of the high fashion brand Missoni. In 1996, Vittorio and his two siblings assumed control of Missoni, with Vittorio eventually rising to the rank of CEO. In January 2013, a plane carrying Vittorio Missoni, along with his wife three others, disappeared off the coast of Venezuela. In June 2013, the plane's wreckage was located not far from where the aircraft departed, in the waters near the Los Roques island resort.

Early Life:
Vittorio Missoni was born in 1954 in Gallarate, Lomardy, Italy, to parents Ottavio and Rosita. A year prior to Vittorio's birth, the Missonis opened a knitwear store in Gallarate. Their business continued to grow and evolve during the 1950s. In 1958, the first garments featuring the Missoni label appeared in stores. The Missoni family also added two additional children, Luca and Angela, to their numbers during this time.
By the mid-1960s, the company's easy knitwear designs, bearing a distinctive zigzag pattern, had become the basis of a successful brand. Vittorio and his siblings grew up in an environment of style and privilege, meeting fashion legends and posing for pictures that ran in fashion and lifestyle magazines. In the late 1960s, the Missonis relocated their company headquarters from Lombardy to Milan—this move contributed to the elevation of northern Italy, and Milan in particular, as a world capitol of fashion.

Leadership of Missoni:
In 1996, after more than 30 years in the business, Ottavio and Rosita passed leadership of the Missoni house to their three children; the change took place at a time when interest in the brand had ebbed significantly. Each of the three younger Missonis took on a distinct role within the business, with the goal of restoring it to international prominence. While Angela and Luca assumed creative control, Vittorio led the manufacturing and marketing side of operations. Eventually, he moved from a marketing role to become the company's chief executive in Europe and the United States.
Vittorio Missoni initiated the brand's global expansion after 1996. Over the next 15 years, Missoni became a lifestyle brand as well as a fashion house, lending its name and well-known patterns to items as diverse as towels, perfume and bicycles. The first Missoni hotel opened in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2009. A collaboration with the modestly priced chain store Target in 2011 proved so popular that traffic to the Target website overwhelmed its servers. Advertisements featuring the Missoni family, including Angela's daughter Margherita, have helped to establish the glamorous image of the brand. The Missoni family compound in Sardinia has been featured in Missoni ads, as well as in countless magazine articles and profiles.

Disappearance:
On January 4, 2013, a private plane carrying Vittorio Missoni; his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni; two other passengers; and two crew members, disappeared off the coast of Venezuela. The party was returning from the island resort of Los Roques, a destination favored by many wealthy Italians. At the time of its disappearance, the plane was headed for the Caracas airport—a short trip, usually taking less than an hour.
A massive sea and air search did not immediately yield evidence or clues of the plane's whereabouts. While many news outlets assumed that the plane had crashed, members of the Missoni family remained unconvinced that this was the case, citing a text message sent form the plane after its disappearance as evidence of foul play. Luca Missoni, a trained pilot, flew to Venezuela to assist in the aerial search. Newspaper reports that the bodies had been discovered, on January 10, 2013, proved to be untrue.

Plane Found:
In late June 2013, wreckage of the plane that had been carrying Missoni and five others nearly six months earlier, was found in the waters near the Los Roques island resort (near where the aircraft departed), according to the Missoni fashion company. Family members of the missing passengers "are confident that the investigation will follow through to ascertainment of the causes and the responsibility for the accident," the company said in a statement on June 27, 2013.

Christian Louboutin Fashion Designer (1963–)
Fashion designer Christian Louboutin has developed an international following for his distinctive red-soled footwear.

Synopsis:
Born in France in 1963, Christian Louboutin first started dreaming up fantastical footwear in his early teens. He was expelled from school at age 16 and started working for famed shoe designer Charles Jourdan two years later. In the early 1990s, Louboutin launched his own line of women's shoes. He added his legendary red soles in 1993. In 2003, Louboutin expanded into women's handbags. He then started up his men's shoes line in 2011.

Early Life:
Born in Paris, France, in 1963, famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin had little interest in school growing up. He was the youngest child born to a cabinetmaker and a stay-at-home mother. His father wasn't around much so Louboutin spent a lot of his early years in the company of his mother and three sisters.
Louboutin happened on his life's passion by accident. All it took was a trip to a museum. He saw a sign indicating that high heel shoes were not permitted there. "I was totally fascinated by that sign. I'd never seen shoes like that," he explained to W. Before long Louboutin was filling notebooks with his own shoe sketches. He was further inspired by a book of Roger Vivier's designs given to him by a friend. Vivier designed shoes for Christian Dior in the 1950s.

Career Beginnings:
Expelled from school at age 16, Louboutin soon went to work at the famed Parisian cabaret Folies Bergère. He did all sorts of jobs for the dancers, including fulfilling his personal dream of creating shoes for them. Louboutin then learned the ins and outs of the shoe business when he landed a job with Charles Jourdan in the early 1980s.
After working as a freelance designer for a time, Louboutin set up his own shop in Paris in the early 1990s. He found the inspiration for his trademark red outer soles in 1993. "My assistant was sitting there, painting her nails red. I took one look and decided to color my soles red as a statement for the season," Louboutin told Footwear News. "I thought, 'Oh my god! Red soles are so flirtatious,' and my customers asked me not to stop." His artistic yet sexy shoes soon attracted the likes of Princess Caroline of Monaco, one of his early customers. Madonna wore his dangerously high heels in some of her videos, helping to introduce the world to Louboutin.

Later Successes:
Over the years, Louboutin has continued to turn out season after season of imaginative footwear. "For inspiration, I often imagine a courtesan living out her life in a circus," he explained to Marie Claire magazine. He has turned his surrealistically beautiful shoes into an international success story. According to The New Yorker, he sells more than 500,000 pairs of his fabulous footwear each year. The cost of getting a pair of Louboutins can range from nearly $400 up to $6,000. Louboutin has stores around the world in addition to his Paris headquarters.
In addition to women's shoes, Louboutin has worked to expand his reach in fashion. He branched out into handbags in 2003, and he now offers a line of men's shoes as well. In 2013, Louboutin will debut his new beauty line.
With all his success, Louboutin has worked hard to defend his designs from copiers and counterfeiters. He even took the fashion company Yves Saint Laurent to court over its use of red outer soles on some of its shoes. Louboutin also set up his own website to address the counterfeit shoe problem.
Outside of his fashion empire, Louboutin has taken on some creative challenges. He worked with director David Lynch on a photo exhibit in 2007. In 2012, Louboutin helped design many elements of Feu, or "Fire," a show at the legendary Parisian club Crazy Horse.

Alexander McQueen Fashion Designer (1969–2010)
Alexander McQueen was a London-based, English fashion designer who was head designer of the Louis Vuitton Givenchy fashion line, before starting his own line.

Synopsis:
Alexander McQueen was born on March 17, 1969, in Lewisham, London. He became head designer of the Louis Vuitton-owned Givenchy fashion line and, in 2004, launched his own menswear line. He earned the British Fashion Council's British Designer of the Year award four times, and was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire. McQueen committed suicide in 2010, shortly after the death of his mother.

Profile:
Fashion designer. Lee Alexander McQueen was born on March 17, 1969 into a working-class family living in public housing in London's Lewisham district. His father, Ronald, was a cab driver, and his mother, Joyce, taught social science. On their small incomes, they supported McQueen and his five siblings. McQueen, called "Lee" by his friends for most of his life, recognized his homosexuality at an early age and was teased extensively about it by schoolmates.
At age 16, McQueen dropped out of school. He found work on Savile Row, a street in London's Mayfair district famous for offering made-to-order men's suits. He worked first with the tailor shop Anderson and Shephard, and then moved to nearby Gieves and Hawkes.
McQueen decided to further his clothes-making career, and moved on from Savile Row. McQueen began working with theatrical costume designers Angels and Bermans. The dramatic style of the clothing he made there would become a signature of his later independent design work. McQueen then left London for a short stint in Milan, where he worked as a design assistant to Italian fashion designer Romeo Gigli. Upon his return to London, he enrolled at Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design, and received his M.A. in fashion design in 1992. The collection he produced as the culminating project of his degree was inspired by Jack the Ripper, and was famously bought in its entirety by the well-known London stylist and eccentric Isabella Blow. She became a long-time friend of McQueen, as well as an advocate for his work.
Soon after obtaining his degree, Alexander McQueen started his own business designing clothes for women. He met enormous success with the introduction of his "bumster" pants, so named because of their extremely low-cut waistline. Only four years out of design school, McQueen was named Chief Designer of Louis Vuitton-owned Givenchy, a French haute couture fashion house. Although it was a prestigious job, McQueen took it reluctantly, and his tenure there (from 1996 to 2001) was a tumultuous time in the designer's life. Even as he was pushing the limits of what people expected from fashion (one of his shows featured a model who was an amputee walking the runway on carved wooden legs), McQueen felt he was being held back. He would later say that the job "constrain[ed] his creativity." However, he also made the following admission: "I treated Givenchy badly. It was just money to me. But there was nothing I could do: the only way it would have worked would have been if they had allowed me to change the whole concept of the house, to give it a new identity, and they never wanted me to do that." Even with his reservations about his work, McQueen won British Designer of the year in 1996, 1997, and 2001, all during his time at Givenchy.
In 2000, Gucci bought a 51 percent stake in Alexander McQueen's private company, and provided the capital for McQueen to expand his business. McQueen left Givenchy shortly thereafter. In 2003, McQueen was declared International Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and A Most Excellent Commander of the British Empire by the Queen of England, and won yet another British Designer of the Year honor. Meanwhile, McQueen opened stores in New York, Milan, London, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. With the help of Gucci's investment, McQueen had become even more successful than he was before. Already known for the flare and passion of his shows, McQueen produced even more interesting spectacles after leaving Givenchy. For example, a hologram of model Kate Moss floated ethereally at the showing of his 2006 Fall/Winter line.
Alexander McQueen was also known for not being shy about his lack of traditional good looks or his lower class background. One acquaintance described that during a first encounter, McQueen was "wearing a lumberjack shirt with the most low-class kind of schlubby-looking jeans falling down with a long key chain...[and was] quite podgy." Another friend said that his teeth "looked like Stonehenge." According to those who knew him closely, McQueen was proud of breaking the traditional mold of a successful designer.
In 2007, the specter of death would come to haunt McQueen, first with the suicide of Isabella Blow. The designer dedicated his 2008 Spring/Summer line to Blow, and said that her death "was the most valuable thing I learnt in fashion." Just two years later, on February 2, 2010, McQueen's mother died. One day before her funeral, on February 11, 2010, McQueen was found dead in his Mayfair, London apartment. The cause of death was determined to be suicide.
Alexander McQueen's rise from lower-class high school dropout to internationally famous designer is a remarkable story. His bold styles and fascinating shows inspired and wowed the world of fashion, and his legacy lives on. Longtime co-designer Sarah Burton took over the still-operating Alexander McQueen brand, and McQueen's contribution to fashion was honored by a 2011 exhibition of his creations at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
